Collecting and submitting ecological records

When collecting ecological records the minimum amount of information we require is:

  • The recorder's name, address and telephone number.
  • The species seen.
  • The location of the observation either marked on a map or as a six figure grid reference (eg SE 463 780).
  • The date of the observation.

West Yorkshire Ecology can accept records in a variety of formats. Electronic records in a spreadsheet such as Microsoft Excel are easiest to handle, but we will also take records on paper. If you have exports from specific database packages please telephone to discuss the best method for transfer.

E-mail and telephone details are available in Contact us

Data will be accepted by West Yorkshire Ecology on the basis that any records submitted can be distributed to third parties, unless you state specifically that you do not wish this to happen unless you have given your explicit permission for the data to be released. Be aware that putting controls on the use of your data may constrain WYE in their ability to help protect West Yorkshire's ecological diversity.

We may wish to contact you in order to verify unusual records.
